High-resolution Trabecular Bone Images

The image above is a 4 x 4 x 1.8 mm block of trabecular bone from a human vertebral body (spine bone). It was imaged at 20 micron resolution (0.020 mm). Note that the volume fraction (ratio of bone to total volume) is very low. Typical volume fractions for vertebral bodies are between 10% and 20%.

This image is an 8 x 8 x 1.5 mm section of trabecular bone, again taken from a human vertebral body and imaged at 20 micron resolution.

The image above is a 4 x 4 x 1.6 mm section of trabecular bone from the human femur imaged at 20 micron resolution. Notice that the portion of the block which is made up of bone (the volume fraction) is much higher than for the vertebrae.
