The Berkeley Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory, in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley, was established in 1993 with
three broad goals: 1) to educate students in performing independent,
high-quality research in orthopaedic biomechanics; 2) to apply the
principles of engineering mechanics to understand basic biological
processes and mechanisms related to the structure and function of bone;
and 3) to apply the principles of mechanical engineering to the design,
analysis, and development of bone-prosthetic systems. Congruent with
our emphasis on collaboration, our laboratory is closely associated with
the medical school at UCSF (particularly the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery) with which we have a number of ongoing joint projects. This
collaboration provides input from surgeons, radiologists, biologists and
other bioengineers, and provides our students with first-hand experience
in various clinical aspects of biomechanics.
